20 A - Growing Your Social Capital

" It is who you know, not what you know "

1) Domain expert
  • Smitty is a mechanic ( specialty in fixing Volkswagen cars) in Gainesville. He has been in this business for over 35 years. The slot I will be filling is the domain expert because he understands the functionalities of how cars work. He is also able to easily tell me if this product will be feasible for cars. Smitty has been my personal mechanic since I came to Gainesville; therefore, I believe that he would be a great expert on how this product should be displayed on the car, if feasible. If this were to workout, Smitty would be the first person to test out my product on his cars. In return, he would be adverting and promoting individuals to buy my product.

2)  Supplier Expert
  • JC AutoZone is the manager at an AutoZone shop. The slot I will be filling is the supplier expert.  He promotes the products in shop; therefore, he is a great person to be in contact if I want a buyer. I recently met JC when I went to his store to get new lights for my car. He did a great job explaining his products; therefore, I believe that he would be able to supply the product to his customers. He also explained what prices and deals I could offer to the customers to ensure that the product is thriving.

3) Market Expert
  • Mara Perry is a recent graduate from the University of South Tampa. She graduated with her Masters degree in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing. The slot I will be filling is the market expert. Ms. Perry was able to explain ways in which I could reach my target audience (college students) . She suggest promoting my product on social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, and even snapchat would be a great way to grab their attention.

Reflect.
I think that this allowed me to understand the different types of people I would be networking with to promote my product. It was challenging to talk to the individuals I did not know well like JC and Mara Perry. I was afraid that they might find my idea to be ridiculous since it is very different. They were intrigued about the idea; therefore, giving me the confidence to  further explain my ideal product. This experience gave me a reality check on appropriate ways to approach my products and carter it to each individual I network with. This differs from past experiences because I have never had to be intentional about who I wanted to network with. Normally, I  would network with people at different events put on by the Business school at the University of Florida and through my involvements.

  1. Hi Jess,
You did a great job on this assignment! You really reached out to great potential networks and found a unique avenue to make your product successful. I’m glad that you were able to learn the types of people you’d be networking with and challenged yourself to reach out. I’m sure their support helped you make your opportunity a reality and that is always comforting!

  2. Hello, Jess that is great you found an expert like your mechanic to be one of the people you can bounce ideas off of. Someone who has been in the business for so long know what he is doing and will be a good resource. Another good resource you found was the guy at AutoZone. He deals with tons of parts and probably will have good ideas on how the supply chain works at AutoZone.
